CAREER:

Domestic Career

Sanju Samson made his first-class debut for the Kerala Ranji team aged 17 against Vidarbha on 3 November 2011. He made an almost immediate impact the following season, scoring two and a half centuries in five matches.

The 2013-14 Ranji Trophy was the best season for Samson as he really came to the party. In the first match, the North East Assam side recorded a defiant score of 323 runs in the first innings. However, Sanju Samson anchored Assam’s innings with a career-high 211 to give Kerala a vital 39-run lead. He hit 23 fours and 5 sixes to complete his first double century in the Ranji Trophy.

He was top scorer after the second round matches of the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy with 377 runs from 2 matches at an average of 188.5. Overall, he played six matches (11 innings) and scored 530 runs at an average of 58.88 to become Kerala’s top run-scorer.

IPL Career

After an impressive rookie season in the Ranji Trophy, Sanju Samson turned heads and was selected by the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, he didn’t get the chance to play for them and ended up moving to Rajasthan Royals in 2013 where he developed his potential.

As a result, Rajasthan Royals retained Sanju for the 2015 IPL season. The Rajasthan Royals did well in the league and reached the knockout rounds, but Sanju Samson was unable to do justice to their cause as he only recorded a score above 50 in the 15 matches he played.

Sanju scored his maiden T20I century in IPL 2017 against Rising Pune Supergiant on 11 April 2017 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. When Rajasthan returned to the IPL in January 2018, he was immediately bought by the franchise for Rs. 8 crore at IPL auction. On 29 March 2019, Sanju Samson scored his second IPL century against Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring an unbeaten 102 off just 55 balls including 10 fours and 4 sixes.

International Career

Sanju Samson had great runs and consistent performances in the IPL and Ranji Trophy which meant the Kerala player was selected to tour Zimbabwe in 2015. He made his first appearance for India in a T20 match. However, it was not a good game for him as he only managed 19 runs from 24 balls and has never played for India since.

He was selected for the T20I series of India’s tour of New Zealand in 2020 and was part of the game XI as a starter. Sanju became an integral part of the Rajasthan Royals’ batting lineup. When Rahul Dravid was advising the Royals in the IPL-7, he praised Samson, saying that he is one of the current players who will stand out for India in the near future.
