In a thrilling encounter at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Cameron Green’s scintillating century proved to be the driving force behind Mumbai Indians’ impressive eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 69 of TATA IPL 2023.

The match began with an electrifying display from SRH openers Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal, who both scored sparkling fifties. However, Mumbai Indians’ bowlers made a stunning comeback in the slog overs, restricting the away side to a challenging total of 200/4.

Chasing 201, Mumbai Indians got off to a solid start with Ishan Kishan displaying aggression right from the beginning. Unfortunately, his innings was short-lived as he mistimed a pull shot, resulting in a catch at mid-on taken by Harry Brook.

Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, had a stroke of luck when he miscued a shot that should have been caught by Sanvir Singh at mid-wicket. Green capitalized on the opportunity and punished the Sunrisers’ bowling attack by smashing a powerful six over deep mid-wicket. Green’s aggression continued in the following over, where he hammered two fours and another six off Tyagi, accumulating 18 runs and guiding Mumbai Indians to a score of 60/1 at the end of the Powerplay.

The partnership between Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green turned the game in Mumbai Indians’ favor. Rohit contributed a valuable 56 off 37 balls, playing a crucial role in the chase. However, it was Green’s unbeaten century off just 47 deliveries that stole the show. With a stunning counter-attack, the duo chased down the target with 12 balls to spare, igniting hope and keeping Mumbai Indians’ playoff dreams alive.

Overall, it was an enthralling performance by Mumbai Indians as they showcased their strength with both bat and ball. This victory not only showcased Cameron Green’s scintillating century but also highlighted the team’s resilience and determination in the face of a challenging target set by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Green then launched an assault on Mayank Dagar, belting a couple of mighty sixes to collect 13 runs in the following over. The boundary spree continued when Rohit Sharma struck a four off Umran Malik and followed it up with a six off a beamer from Vivrant. In the same eventful over, Green reached his fifty in just 20 balls, smashing another six over long on and adding 19 runs to Mumbai Indians’ total. However, Vivrant had to leave the field due to what appeared to be cramps.

Rohit elevated his performance in the next over, hammering three consecutive fours off Umran, propelling Mumbai Indians to 114/1 at the halfway mark. The partnership between the two batsmen reached the milestone of 100 runs in just 51 deliveries. Rohit Sharma completed his own half-century off 31 balls by lofting one over extra cover off Tyagi.

Luck favored Rohit once again as Sanvir Singh dropped him for the second time, this occasion at extra cover. Meanwhile, Green continued to dominate the proceedings with his authoritative and powerful strokes, dispatching a couple of sixes off Nitish Kumar and accumulating 16 runs in the 13th over.

Mayank Dagar ended the formidable 128-run partnership by dismissing Rohit Sharma, who scored 56 runs off 37 balls, caught at backward point where Nitish Kumar executed an extraordinary flying catch. Suryakumar Yadav made his mark immediately by lofting the first delivery over extra cover for a boundary.

Cameron Green continued his unstoppable form, displaying his sheer power by smashing a four and a six off Umran Malik. Suryakumar joined the onslaught, hitting a couple of fours in the same over, accumulating 20 runs and bringing the required run rate below 6. The duo continued their dominance by cracking a couple of fours off Tyagi, who was forced to leave the attack abruptly after bowling a second waist-high full toss.

With just 8 runs needed off 18 balls, Suryakumar took a single, allowing Green, who was on 94, to face the next delivery. Green hammered the ball through extra cover for a four, inching closer to his maiden IPL century. He then calmly took a single to covers, leaving the team with just 2 runs required off 15 balls. Sensing victory, Suryakumar nudged the ball to the leg side for a quick single.

With Green on 99 runs and only one needed to secure the win, Bhuvneshwar Kumar deceived him with a slower delivery. The keeper fumbled, but the batsmen didn’t attempt a bye. Finally, Green achieved his maiden IPL century by swiping a ball wide of mid-on for a boundary, completing his hundred and sealing the victory for Mumbai Indians.

In the beginning, Mumbai Indians‘ captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field first. They made one change to their starting XI, with Kumar Kartikeya replacing Hrithik Shokeen. Ramandeep Singh, Vishnu Vinod, Tilak Varma, Tristan Stubbs, and Sandeep Warrier were named as their substitutes.

Sunrisers Hyderabad made four changes to their starting eleven, with Mayank Agarwal, Vivrant Singh, Sanvir Singh, and Umran Malik coming in for Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi, Abdul Samad, and Kartik Tyagi. Mayank Markande, Rahul Tripathi, Abdul Samad, Kartik Tyagi, and Akeal Hosein were included in their list of substitutes.

Mumbai Indians had a strong start as their bowlers displayed discipline and generated a slight swing, keeping the SRH openers at bay. The home team conceded only one boundary in the first two overs. Mayank Agarwal then aimed to increase the scoring rate by striking a couple of fours off Jason Behrendorff, accumulating 12 runs in the over. Abhishek Sharma followed suit, combining power with precise placement to hit two fours off Chris Jordan, adding 10 runs to the total in the fourth over.

However, Mayank Agarwal had a fortunate escape when a major miscommunication led to him being stranded in the middle while attempting a risky single. The fielder missed a direct hit at the non-striker’s end, allowing Agarwal to complete the run. Had the fielder hit the stumps, Agarwal would have been well short of his crease.

The batting duo continued to find the boundaries, with Mayank Agarwal striking a couple of boundaries off Akash Madhwal, while Vivrant took charge against Piyush Chawla, propelling Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to a score of 53/0 at the end of the Powerplay. The pair maintained a steady scoring rate, with Vivrant reaching his maiden IPL fifty off 36 balls, guiding SRH to 93/0 at the halfway mark. Agarwal then reached the milestone of a 100-run opening partnership, the first for SRH in the season, by smashing a boundary down the ground off Kumar Kartikeya.

In the 13th over, the duo shifted gears, with Agarwal hitting a six and a four off Jason Behrendorff to complete his own half-century in just 32 balls. Vivrant contributed another maximum as he launched a massive 91-meter six over the leg side, accumulating 19 runs from the over. Akash Madhwal conceded a six from his second delivery in the 14th over, but he quickly rebounded to break the 140-run partnership by having Vivrant caught at deep mid-wicket for 69 runs off 47 balls. It marked the highest score by a player in their IPL debut innings.

Despite the loss of a wicket, SRH remained undeterred as Agarwal continued his aggressive approach, smashing a four and a six off Kumar Kartikeya, followed by a powerful six straight down the ground off Piyush Chawla, totaling 24 runs from two overs.

Mumbai Indians’ captain, Rohit Sharma, reintroduced Akash Madhwal into the attack, and he delivered the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Agarwal for 83 runs off 46 balls, caught behind off a short delivery. Madhwal bowled an excellent 17th over, conceding only six runs. Chris Jordan carried on the good work in the following over, claiming the wicket of Glenn Phillips for 1 run off 4 balls while giving away just six runs. Madhwal continued his impressive spell by cleaning up the in-form Heinrich Klaasen for 18 runs off 13 balls with a full delivery. He followed it up with a lethal yorker that dismantled Harry Brook’s stumps on the very next ball, finishing a brilliant spell of 4/37. Madhwal’s final over was equally impressive, conceding just six runs.

In the last over bowled by Chris Jordan, Aiden Markram and Sanvir Singh provided some relief for SRH, hitting a six and a four respectively to accumulate 14 runs. This helped SRH reach a total of 200/5 at the end of their 20 overs. Mumbai Indians displayed excellent bowling in the slog overs, limiting SRH to just 32 runs in the final four overs.
