Indian Cricket Team in 2nd ODI Match

India began their World Cup preparations on Sunday in Indore with a convincing 99-run victory against Australia in the second One-Day International. As India built the lead in 399/5, Shreyas Iyer struck his third ODI century, Shubman Gill his sixth, Suryakumar Yadav his half-century, and KL Rahul his half-century. Australia’s goal was reduced from 399 to 317 after a weather delay, however, they were dismissed for 217 with three wickets each taken by Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin.

With two fours off Mohammed Shami in the first over, Matthew Short got the chase off to a strong start. However, Steve Smith, the interim captain, edged to slide after being dismissed by Short, who was replaced by Jasprit Bumrah for this game. Before the players had to leave the field due to rain, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne had led Australia beyond the fifty mark. Australia had a difficult assignment when play restarted since they needed 261 runs in 24 overs at over 11 runs per over to reach the DLS amended mark.

In order to eliminate Shardul Thakur’s danger, Warner and Labuschagne had to play aggressively from the get-go. Conversely, Warner even batted right-handed against Ashwin, sweeping him for a four, making him more difficult to score against. Labuschagne was bowled by a backflipper and fell to Ashwin. Warner, who had already reached his second fifty-plus score of the game, proceeded to bat right-handed against Ashwin until being out LBW while trying a reverse sweep. Replays revealed that he had really edged the ball into his pad.

With the dismissals of Josh Inglis by Ashwin and Alex Carey by Jadeja, the advantage of India was maintained. With a straight hit, Ishan Kishan knocked Cameron Green out. When Adam Zampa was struck by a Jadeja ball, Australia’s score dropped to 140/8. Australia was bowled out for 217 in the 29th over, despite some powerful knocks from Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott. Abbott had the game’s highest total with a fifty-plus off of 29 balls, but it was unable to stop India from winning easily.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was allowed to bat for India, made a strong start, striking two fours from Spencer Johnson’s debut before being bowled for 8 by Josh Hazlewood. Iyer and Shubman, Shreyas Gill then grabbed control as Iyer continued to drive boundaries over the top and through the covers while Gill drew a six off Abbott and drove a four past cover. Gill took Green for a four and a six in his opening over as well. Gill and Iyer began the battle after a brief rain delay, with Gill hitting fifty in 37 balls and Iyer in 41 balls (with a six off Johnson).

Iyer hitting a few sixes at the spinners and Gill regularly hitting boundaries made it difficult for Australia to slow down India’s scoring rate. In just the 29th over, India had reached 200, and Iyer quickly followed with a century in just 86 balls. He was given a reprieve when the third umpire decided that Abbott hadn’t taken a return catch cleanly, but he got dismissed in the next over when he failed to cross the boundary, just after raising a 200-run partnership with Gill. Rahul hit a six off Zampa to get things going, and Gill then achieved his century, becoming only the fifth player to reach that milestone in five ODIs before turning 25.  Rahul also hit a Green delivery out of the ground before Gill’s innings came to an end in the same over when he was undone by a slower ball.

With a 59-run partnership, Rahul and Kishan kept the momentum going and helped India reach 300 in the 41st over. Kishan, however, quickly left the field after trying to make another huge shot and was caught by Zampa for 31 off 18 balls. In the 44th over off Green, Suryakumar unleashed his arsenal of strokes after two calm overs and smashed four big sixes. Just before Green dismissed the Indian captain, Rahul completed a 35-ball fifty, but Suryakumar scored the most of the runs during a half-century partnership. Suryakumar still maintained in creating destruction, crushing six and two fours in an Abbott over of 17 runs to reach a fifty off of 24 balls. In the 48th over, Jadeja and Suryakumar both hit a four against Hazlewood. Green’s performance with the ball was unimpressive.  conceding 103 runs despite giving away only five runs in the 49th over. Abbott was hit for a six by Suryakumar in the final over, but he kept it tight otherwise, preventing India from reaching 400.
