With the Red Devils on cruise control and minutes from the final whistle in the driver’s seat, Cristiano Ronaldo descended the tunnel in despair.

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo looked disappointed during his team’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Thursday. Ronaldo, who started United’s last home game against Newcastle United, was left on the bench by manager Eric ten Haag for the game against Spurs. With the Red Devils on cruise control and minutes from the final whistle in the driver’s seat, the 37-year-old raced down the tunnel in desperation.

With Ronaldo back on the bench, it looked like United would again fail to convert their best approach play into a goal, as he hit 19 unrewarded shots in the first 45 minutes.

However, Fred and Bruno Fernandes scored in a deserved second-half win that put the Red Devils within a point of the top four.

Hugo Lloris’ lone heroism in a Tottenham goal kept the score low on a difficult night for Spurs’ dreams of challenging for their first league title since 1961.

“It was the team’s best performance so far this season,” said Ten Haig. “You see that we are evolving, but you see last week how we want to play. We improve every time.

“It was really nice to see that against Spurs, who are a great team for me.”

Ten Haag was also asked about Ronaldo’s action when he didn’t bring him in, to which he replied: “I’ll take care of tomorrow. I want the focus to be on the team’s performance.
