Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel added 81 runs for the eighth wicket to give the hosts an edge over Australia on the second day of the first Test on Thursday after Rohit Sharma scored the Indian captain’s maiden Test century. Rohit Sharma scored 120 to register his ninth Test century, while Ravindra Jadeja and Patel remained unbeaten on 66 and 52 respectively as India reached 321/7 at stumps in their first innings. As a result, India bowled out the visitors for 177 to give Australia a 144-run lead.

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel were the late heroes as they stoically challenged the Australian bowling in the last session with a sprawling 185-ball partnership. Ravindra Jadeja reached his half-century off 114 balls, while Patel scored 50 off 94 balls. Off-spinner Todd Murphy was the pick of the bowlers for the Kangaroos with 5/82.
