Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Australia captain Pat Cummins to leave India mid-series over private family matter

Australian media has reported that Australian captain Pat Cummins will return on Monday, February 20, to attend to family matters after the India-Australia Test series. Cummins is expected to join the team before the third Test starts on March 1 in Indore.

Under Cummins, Australia did not do well in this tour of the subcontinent and lost the Test tournament. They lost the first three days of two Tests in Nagpur and New Delhi and failed in the Spin Test. If India beat it in the first round of the World Cup, then Australia could be out. The four-match tour will pit Australia against India, Sri Lanka or South Africa with the final in England.

Australia could be completely eliminated as India battle Sri Lanka for a place in the final. Australia failed miserably in Delhi as the bowlers returned home in just one innings of the match. Despite a bright start to day two ending at 61/1, Australia’s second innings could only manage 113 runs in the morning session over three days.

After the match, Cummins said the bowlers need to be flexible and find ways to score against India.

“I think it will come out. Did I make the right choice? – Cummins said after the game.

“Unfortunately, some of us end up beating things we don’t like,” he said.
